Earlier this week the radio industry lost an amazing icon, John Peel. Peel was a legend in England's broadcasting community and most famous for his Peel Session broadcasts in which the world's best musicians and rising stars would perform live on his show. Many of these were commercially released and are highly valued among collectors (I particularly enjoy my New Order set). Peel helped launch the careers of so many artists and you knew you made it to the top when he invited you to perform on his show. Peel was a champion for new and undiscovered artists and really cared about the music and the listeners. Today's corporate simulcast-driven stations could learn a lot from Peel's success. Afterall, when it comes down to it, radio should be about the music, anything less is wasted air time. As a former DJ I salute John Peel and everything he stood for. John, you were an inspiration to so many of us and you will be insanely missed. Radio will never be the same without you.......
