Duran Duran: Making of Red Carpet Massacre (In Studio Interview)

The new Duran Duran album, produced by Timbaland and Justin Timberlake, will be released on November 13th and includes the stellar Falling Down single, the best track they've done since Ordinary World. Sony has posted an exclusive "making of the album" interview online for fans eager to hear and see more from the new romantic legends. Looking forward to this one, as the advance tracks I've heard prove that Duran Duran is still more than capable of crafting fresh pop music.

Sorry but this new single is utter gash.

Indeed. Falling down is far from the best thing they've done sing Ordinary World. Skin Divers and Nite Runner are downright *embarassing* attempts at sounding "current".

In terms of "Top 40" potential (not so much in song quality), "Falling Down" may be the best single since "Ordinary World." As a former radio man, that is how I view it (although, I'm still shocked "Sunrise" only hit #89 in 2004). The commercial appeal (not the diehard fan appeal) might be strong enough to attract the non-Duranies out there, and almost anything Timbaland touches (like it or not) does these days. I'd like to see the band back on the Top 40 charts, not just the Adult Top 40 charts as they were with the last album.

I too would've liked to have seen 'Sunrise' do better. And sure, I would love to see the band back in the top 40.

But...at what price Paul? By losing the small hint of credibility they've actually built back up when the original 5 reunited? Sure, Astronaut didn't sell very well (what...300k copies moved?) but it was well received by critics and fans alike.

I've been a DD fan for nearly 25 years and never in that time have I witnessed such adverse reaction amongst so-called "hard-core" Duran fans as I've seen when Nite Runner and Skin Divers first circulated the web. Let's not kid ourselves: there's no way that DD will ever have a commercial success again. They are all pushing 50 and for the most part are viewed as an 80's band with a 40 something year old soccer mom core audience. By thinking they are going to attract a larger (younger, hipper?) audience by recruiting the likes of Timbaland and Timberlake is absurd. Yeah, those guys might sell a boatload of records to a crowd with *impeccable* taste (insert sarcasm here) but that same crowd will be just as likely to download the album off the web from blogs not unlike your own.

Duran Duran need to stick to what they know: good solid songwriting without whoring themselves out to what major label execs want. The labels aren't important. Don't worry about radio play, don't worry about going platinum...just make good music. Andy Taylor was right for leaving Duran. Hell, Simon himself said in Rolling Stone not long ago that the band wanted to sound "more black". HUH?? How about sounding like Duran Duran Simon? :( Falling Down as a song is boring and forumlated (which on second thought fits perfectly with the boring muck that radio plays these days) As Nick would have said 20 years ago "contrived". They already made an "ordinary world". Do we really need a weak attempt at "ordinary world part II"??

In my opinion, this is a stain on the stellar career that Duran has had for the last 27 years. I sincerely hope that the rest of Red Carpet Massacre proves me wrong, but I'm not holding my breath.

Love your blog dude. Keep up the good work. ;)

hmm. well i haven't heard the song yet. but the fact that it was produced by some rapper doesn't really make me WANT to listen to it :P

ps. I don't think i've heard 'Ordinary World' before. at least the title doesn't sound familiar. maybe you should post it on your other blog to refresh my memory! hehe.

I think that you all stayed in the past.. Duran Duran are something that you still didn't understand: "Styles changes, Style doesn't.."

If you want a boring group hear to U2, then will be happy, and leave Duran Duran alone.

Hear the new album for two weeks, then tell me something..

Bollocks! Duran never had "credibility"! They were always a band full of poptarts, even when Andy Taylor was with them.

If anything, Andy is the least credible of the five because he was only too happy to forsake his "artisitic integrity" for the sake of a few quid. He's the musician's equivalent of a whore. He spread his legs and took it up the arse for the paycheck and then fucked off (again) when he'd made a few quid to retire to Ibiza and live off the royalties from HLTW.
How's that moral highground now, Livewires?

Great clip. I'm not a huge DD fan, but this new music is gaining more interest from me.

What's up with the bashing board? wow...that's sad.
