Long before The Underworld were Born Slippy Trainspotting heroes, and pre-dating the early eighties cult following of Freur, The Screen Gemz appeared underneath the radar. Sounding more like Elvis Costello than the electronic / remix pioneers Karl Hyde and Rick Smith would later become, The Screen Gemz released their only 7" single, I Just Can't Stand Cars / Teenage Teenage, through Inflatable Records in 1979. (For a great look at the history of all three bands, be sure to visit this site). This vinyl release is extremely rare and highly sought after by post-punk collectors. Thankfully, the brilliant Killed By Death Records has posted a great rip of the original release for all to enjoy (just follow the link below). An essential listen for post-punk and dance afficianados alike. I'm a huge fan of The Underworld and Freur, so hearing the earliest origins of these two groups is quite a treat. The Screen Gemz
