Indie Release Spotlight: Minus The Bear

Moving on from California's Rooney, we find ourselves further north in post-grunge Seattle with Minus The Bear. Unlike Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, these guys are much more experimental and dabble in electronics as much as they jam on guitars:

Minus the Bear have much more in common with chronic noise masters Dalek than you might think: their records are frequently steeped in atmospherics and peppered with some serious prog-rock tendencies. Their most recent full length (and featured remix victim) Menos El Oso was heavy on samples and their live set finds guitarist David Knudson playing his peddles more frequently than his guitar; hunkered over the side of the stage, syncopated and spastic.

The track Dr. L'ling comes from the forthcoming release Planet of Ice (August 21st) while the second two tracks come from the band's new remix album, Interpretaciones Del Oso, which came out in February (both on Suicide Squeeze Records). They will be playing this year's Sasquatch Music Festival along with big named acts like The Beastie Boys, Bjork, The Dandy Warhols, Interpol, Spoon, and more. Minus The Bear proves that there is more to Seattle than grunge and flannel shirts...
